On August 2nd I will file as a candidate for the St. Louis Park School Board and am incredibly excited to start campaigning!
My wife Molly and I feel fortunate to live in this great community with wonderful neighbors and strong schools. I am running because I want to give back to our community; and to ensure that our children Eli and Emma are able to attend and thrive in schools that are even better than what we have today.
I believe that I have made significant contributions in the last several years to help make our community and schools strong. Most recently I have served as chair for the following organizations: SLP ICARE (the legislative action committee for our schools), the Community Education Advisory Council as well as the Vote Yes Committee which helped pass the bond and levy referenda in 2008. I have also been a member of the Core Planning Team for the School District’s Strategic Plan and have been a math tutor for the last seven years (working with students at Aquila, Cedar Manor, Susan Lindgren and SLP Senior High) among other activities.
My campaign will be a positive, but realistic one. We have had our struggles over the last decade as budgets continue to be cut and we attempt to do more with less. We closed a school (one at which I had tutored for five years) and now we are working to create new school communities following our district’s reconfiguration.
There is no doubt we have challenges, but I believe this also presents an opportunity for us to determine a new, sustainable vision for each of our schools that solidifies our standing as one of the great school districts in our state.
My background as a father of young kids who will be attending school soon, as an engineer who knows the value of science, math and technology in our global economy, and as a community member deeply committed to action on behalf of all our students will serve me well in crafting this vision with your input and partnership.
As always, please let me know if you have any ideas or concerns. Thank you!
